Why Movie Theaters Are Still So Cold, 100 Years Later
A 1925 Times Square theater bet everything on an untested cooling system and accidentally invented the summer blockbuster. The habit it started never really stopped.
In the summer of 1925, a movie palace on Times Square took out a newspaper ad boasting that it had sunk more than $100,000 into a "refrigeration plant" for one purpose: making the auditorium cold. That single line item, more than any script decision Hollywood has made since, is the reason theaters are still freezing today.
The theater was the Rivoli, and the system belonged to Willis Carrier, the engineer whose name is now shorthand for air conditioning itself. According to ACHR News, a trade publication that has covered the HVAC industry since 1926, the Rivoli's system debuted on Memorial Day and immediately hit a snag: last-minute adjustments delayed the chiller, and the crowd, including Paramount Pictures chief Adolph Zukor, filed into a hot theater. Engineers sweated through the newsreel watching Zukor watch the fanning patrons instead of the screen. Then the temperature dropped. By the time the lights came up, Zukor had seen enough to declare, "Yes, the people are going to like it."
How a cooling gimmick became an industry habit
They did. Within five years, more than 300 theaters nationwide were hanging banners advertising "Cooled by Refrigeration," according to ACHR News, turning what had been the movie business's dead season into the exact opposite: the birth of the summer blockbuster calendar Hollywood still builds around a century later. Air conditioning didn't just make theaters more comfortable. It rescued an entire quarter of the release schedule.
A century of habit is a hard thing to shake, and the modern reasons theaters stay cold are less romantic than a Times Square marquee. Bustle laid out the practical case: HVAC systems are calibrated for a packed house, because a few hundred bodies throw off real, measurable heat, so an auditorium that's a third full on a Tuesday afternoon runs exactly as cold as it would on a sold-out Friday night, minus the crowd that would have warmed it up. Add high ceilings that let whatever heat does exist rise uselessly out of reach, and windowless walls that block any outside warmth from creeping in, and a mostly empty theater cools faster and stays colder than almost any room a person walks into on purpose.
Why don't theaters just turn the heat up for a small crowd?
Because the system isn't built to react in real time to how many tickets sold. A chain sets its HVAC to handle a full house and largely leaves it there across showings, rather than recalibrating for every screening's headcount, which is why the loneliest 2 p.m. matinee often feels like the coldest seat in the building. There's also a second, less charitable incentive theaters have little reason to fix the gap: a cold room keeps people from dozing off, the same logic that shapes how slowly theaters dim the house lights before a film starts, easing eyes into the dark rather than jolting them.
Is the cold actually helping anyone watch the movie?
That depends on who's sitting in the seat. Bustle points out that comfortable temperature varies enormously by person: some people run cold at what others would call a stuffy room, and that gap means a chain calibrating for the complainers who overheat will always leave the ones who run cold reaching for a jacket. Theaters, weighing a sweaty audience against a shivering one, have consistently bet that overcooling is the safer failure. It's the same bet a casino or an all-day conference room makes for the same reason: cold keeps people awake, and a dozing customer is a customer who remembers the venue, not the show, on their way out.
None of which explains why nobody's fixed the empty-matinee problem in a hundred years of otherwise relentless theater innovation, from digital projection to reclining seats to recalculating exactly when a showtime actually starts. Somewhere between Zukor's newsreel and tonight's 7 p.m. showing, "cold enough to sell tickets" quietly became "cold enough, full stop," and nobody in the industry has had much reason to ask why.
