That slow fade isn't a mood choice by the theater chain's ad department. It's borrowed straight from how your eyes actually work, and it also happens to be the reason a $25 million commercial and a $3,000 dimmer box downstairs in the projection booth are doing more or less the same job.
Why do movie theaters dim the lights slowly instead of all at once?
The short version: your retina needs the runway. Human vision relies on two kinds of photoreceptors that don't hand off cleanly to each other. Cones handle color and daylight brightness but stop working reliably once a room goes dim. Rods take over in low light — sensitive enough to register a single photon — but they're useless in bright conditions and slow to switch on. Modern multiplexes don't do this by hand anymore. A cinema automation controller — a rack-mounted box wired into the house lighting grid — can stretch a dimming cue anywhere from a fraction of a second to a full 60 seconds, triggered automatically as the trailers roll or the feature starts. Manufacturers built in "soft start and soft shutdown" circuitry for a second reason that has nothing to do with eyeballs: snapping incandescent and early LED house lights on and off abruptly created a current surge that shortened bulb life and could trip circuit interference in the building's power grid. The gentle fade that makes for a better viewing experience is, conveniently, also easier on the wiring.

Theater chains have leaned into this instinctively even when they weren't citing the vision science behind it. AMC's own advertising treats the dimming moment as the emotional hinge of the whole experience, not filler before the "real" content starts — worth noticing next time the lights go down, because it's doing physiological work, not just atmospheric work. A theater that cut straight from full lobby brightness to a black screen would be fighting its own audience's eyes for the first several minutes of anything they tried to watch, which is one more reason the advertised showtime never matches when the film actually starts — that runway of trailers and dimming lights is doing real work before a single frame of the feature plays.

Exit signs, aisle lighting, and a faint wash on the walls stay on throughout a screening mostly for safety and code compliance, not adaptation — though keeping that ambient light low and warm-toned rather than switching it off completely does help avoid re-triggering the cone-to-rod transition every time someone gets up for popcorn. It's the same underlying biology doing double duty: once your eyes have made the trip from daylight to darkness, the room is built to make sure nothing knocks them back to the start of that 20-minute journey.

It also isn't the only piece of the moviegoing ritual that turns out to have a real engineering reason behind it rather than pure showmanship — the same is true of why some giant screens curve and others don't. But the next time a theater's lights ease down over half a minute instead of blinking off, that's not ambience for its own sake — it's the same rod-and-cone handoff your eyes perform in a parking garage at dusk, engineered into a lighting cue and billed, occasionally, as movie magic.
