Why LA28 Is Putting an Olympic Pool Inside an NFL Stadium

LA28 plans to convert SoFi Stadium's football field into the largest swimming venue in Olympic history, built to a 50-meter standard that leaves no room for error.

For nine days in the summer of 2028, the field where the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers play regular-season football will not have a blade of turf on it. It will have roughly 1.2 million gallons of water in it instead, held inside temporary steel-and-membrane basins that meet the same tolerances as any permanent Olympic facility on Earth — and every one of those tolerances traces back to a length nobody is allowed to round off: 50 meters, measured wall to touchpad, with zero room to negotiate.

It's going to go sideline to sideline. We will take up the entire expanse of our football field, so all 101,000 square feet will be utilized for the competition area, Juan Carrero, the stadium's vice president of operations, has said of the conversion. Before any of that happens, though, the plan has to clear a much older and less negotiable set of rules than anything the NFL enforces.

A length nobody gets to adjust

World Aquatics, the sport's global governing body, requires that any pool used for Olympic or World Championship swimming measure exactly 50 meters between the touchpads at either end — not approximately, not "close enough," but precisely, because every world record swum anywhere in the world is only comparable to every other one if the distance is identical down to the centimeter. That standard traces to the 1924 Paris Games, where the Piscine des Tourelles became the first Olympic pool built to the modern 50-meter length; the three Olympics before it, in 1908, 1912 and 1920, were swum in specially built 100-meter pools instead. Depth, lane width, starting-block placement and even the buffer lanes on either edge of the course are all specified with the same precision, because a stray wave bouncing off a wall or a pool that's a few centimeters short can be the difference between a world record and a asterisk.

Building water where turf used to be

The engineering problem isn't really the length. It's putting that precision inside a building designed for football. LA28's plan calls for at least two 50-meter pools — one for competition, one for warm-up — built as modular, stainless-steel-panel structures rather than poured concrete, the same general approach organizers used at the 2024 Paris Games, where two temporary 50-meter pools went into the La Défense Arena in just 36 days. Modular systems trade permanence for speed: precision-manufactured panels bolt together on site, a reinforced membrane lines the basin, and the whole thing can be drained and removed once the Games end, leaving the stadium free to host football again. SoFi Stadium's Otto Benedict, senior vice president of facility operations, said the building was designed from the outset for exactly this kind of transformation: The design process and the design thought through the SoFi Stadium was always to be one that was very convertible. It allows us to do many different things.

What doesn't get simpler in a modular build is everything downstream of the water itself — structural load on a stadium floor built for turf, filtration and circulation at a scale most natatoriums never approach, and humidity control across a bowl built to hold 70,000 football fans rather than a swim meet's usual close, climate-managed air. Add broadcast lighting calibrated across the entire water surface and evaporation management with tens of thousands of spectators breathing into the building, and the list of variables an aquatics center takes for granted becomes a fresh engineering problem every time.

The depth question Paris already raised

There's a reason engineers obsess over more than just length. At the Tokyo 2020 pool, minimum depth ran close to 3 meters, deep enough to let turbulence from swimmers' strokes dissipate before it bounces back off the floor and disrupts the next lane over. Paris organizers built their temporary La Défense pool to only 2.2 meters, and by the end of the Games, commentators and outlets including The Athletic and The Guardian were asking whether the shallower water was quietly slowing swimmers down — fewer world records fell in Paris than in recent Games past, and depth was one of the leading theories, alongside the banned "supersuits" that inflated record counts at the notoriously fast 2008 Beijing pool a generation earlier. Nobody proved the Paris pool cost swimmers a world record outright. But the episode left every organizer building a temporary pool after 2024 with the same unspoken question hanging over the blueprints: how deep is deep enough, and how much does a stadium's own limitations end up shaping who stands on the podium.

LA28 hasn't yet named a pool supplier or published final specifications, so it's an open question whether SoFi's basins will chase Beijing's depth or land closer to Paris's. What's already decided is the part that can't be adjusted: 50 meters, touchpad to touchpad, inside a football stadium that was never built to hold water until organizers decided it should.
