Why Your HDMI Cable Needs a Sticker to Handle 4K at 120Hz

There's no such thing as an "HDMI 2.1 cable" -- only a certified "Ultra High Speed" one, and the difference decides whether a TV blacks out at 120Hz.

Police in Taiwan seized more than 3,000 counterfeit HDMI cables in December 2023, cables valued at roughly $2.58 million and sold on the marketplace Shopee as premium, 8K-ready gear. Cut one open, and the fraud is visible immediately: the fake carries six or nine internal wires where a genuine cable needs 19, plus an insulating ring the knockoffs skip entirely.

"A cable that touts 8K compatibility may only be able to support 720p images," Ji Jianting, HDMI Asia Pacific's copyright manager, told Liberty Times Net, and missing insulation raises the odds of a short circuit that can damage a TV or console.

Here's the twist that makes those fakes so easy to sell: there is no such thing as an "HDMI 2.1 cable." Ask a store for one, and you're already asking for the wrong label.

The name on the box isn't the version number

When the HDMI Forum finalized the 2.1 specification in 2020, it didn't just add features — it created a new cable category with its own name, separate from the spec that requires it. Any cable built to handle the full 48Gbps of bandwidth 2.1 needs is called an Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable, full stop. Genuine packaging never lists a version number like "2.1" or "2.0" next to it.

The Ultra High Speed label isn't a marketing suggestion; it's a mandatory certification. Every cable sold under that name has to pass testing at an HDMI Forum Authorized Testing Center for bandwidth, electromagnetic interference, and support for the full feature set: 8K at 60 frames per second, 4K at 120Hz, HDR, variable refresh rate, and enhanced audio return channel. Only after passing does a cable earn the certification label — a hologram with a scannable QR code — for its box.

That QR code connects to the free HDMI Cable Certification app, which checks the label against the licensing administrator's database in real time. Scan a fake, and there's no match. It sounds like overkill for a cable until you remember the trademark has real commercial value: manufacturers must pay a licensing fee and get authorization just to print "HDMI" on a product, which is exactly the incentive that produces knockoffs cheap enough to undercut certified ones by half.

What actually breaks when the cable isn't up to spec

An 18Gbps cable — the old "High Speed" tier from the HDMI 2.0 era — runs a 4K television at 60Hz without complaint. Push the same cable to 4K at 120Hz, the mode the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 use for their fastest games, and it runs out of headroom. In practice that looks like a black screen that does nothing, sparkling artifacts across the picture, sudden flickering, or a "handshake" error where the TV and console simply can't agree on a signal.

None of that requires a counterfeit, either — a merely underspecified cable causes the same symptoms. That's the practical reason to care about the label at all: it isn't about audio fidelity or gold-plated connectors, which do essentially nothing for a digital signal. It's about whether the cable has the physical bandwidth the picture needs, and 48Gbps is a specific, testable number, not a marketing vibe. Length matters too — certified copper cables generally top out around 10 feet for a clean 4K/120Hz signal before engineers start recommending certified fiber-optic runs for anything longer.

The same certify-or-guess problem shows up one port over: USB-C cables hide their own authentication chip, and skipping it produces near-identical symptoms in a different connector — a charger that won't fast-charge, a monitor that won't sync.

Do I actually need an Ultra High Speed cable?

Only if a source device and a display are both capable of 4K/120Hz or 8K/60, and only for that specific connection. A PS5 hooked to an older 4K/60 television gains nothing from an upgraded cable — the bottleneck is the TV, not the wire. Most current consoles and graphics cards ship with a compliant cable already in the box, which is one more reason to be suspicious of a shockingly cheap replacement sold separately.

How can I tell if my cable is already real?

Check the box for the words "Ultra High Speed HDMI," not a version number. Look for the certification label with its QR code, and scan it with the official app. Genuine trademark typography uses only black, white, and gray — a colorful "HDMI 2.1" printed straight on the cable jacket is itself a warning sign.

What's the real risk of using an uncertified one?

Best case, nothing — plenty of uncertified cables happen to carry enough bandwidth for lower resolutions. Worst case, per HDMI Asia Pacific's own inspection of seized fakes, missing internal shielding raises the odds of a short that damages a port on a television or console, not just a blank screen.

The label is small. The gap between a working 4K/120Hz connection and an expensive brick of plastic and copper is not.
