SPF 30 vs. SPF 50: The Real Math Behind the Numbers
Doubling your SPF doesn't double your protection. The real gap between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is smaller than the label suggests, and how much you apply matters more than either number.
Doubling the number on a sunscreen bottle sounds like it should double the protection. It doesn't come close.
SPF 30 sunscreen filters about 97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 filters about 98%. That's the entire gap, according to Dr. Marisa Garshick, a board-certified dermatologist in New York and a clinical dermatology professor at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medicine, who spoke with PolitiFact for a look at what SPF numbers actually mean. A 20-point jump on the label buys about one additional percentage point of blocked UVB.
What the number is actually measuring
SPF stands for sun protection factor, and it measures one thing specifically: how well a sunscreen blocks ultraviolet B radiation, the wavelength most responsible for sunburn. The higher the SPF, the more these UVB rays are blocked,
said Dr. Adewole Adamson, a dermatologist and internal medicine professor at the University of Texas at Austin's Dell Medical School. It says nothing on its own about UVA protection, the wavelength linked to premature aging and some skin cancers — which is why the FDA requires a separate "broad spectrum" label before a sunscreen can claim to guard against both.
No SPF number reaches 100%. The FDA banned the word "sunblock" in 2011 for exactly that reason: nothing sold at the drugstore blocks every UVB ray.
So does SPF 50 actually matter?
Yes, mostly because of a problem that has nothing to do with chemistry: people don't apply enough. The lab tests that generate SPF ratings assume a thick, even layer — roughly a shot glass worth of sunscreen for a full body — which is far more than most people actually use at the beach or on a run. Lower SPF sunscreens may feel lighter or be easier to wear, but they provide less protection,
Adamson said. The higher the number, the more margin of error you may have if you under apply.
That margin, not the raw math, is why the American Academy of Dermatology recommends at least SPF 30, and many dermatologists now default to SPF 50 as a buffer against real-world sloppiness — under-applying, missing spots, sweating it off.
Where SPF 100 stops helping
The pattern holds at the top end too. Garshick said SPF 100 blocks about 99% of UVB rays — a single point better than SPF 50 — and warned that the bigger number can create its own hazard. Someone wearing SPF 100 may think they can stay in the sun significantly longer without reapplying, which is not the case,
she said. High-SPF sunscreens still wash off, rub off and break down under UV exposure the same as any other formula, and a reapplication schedule of roughly every two hours — or immediately after swimming or heavy sweating — doesn't change because the label says a bigger number.
What actually moves the needle
None of the dermatologists interviewed treated the SPF number as the main event. Broad-spectrum labeling, water resistance for anyone swimming or sweating, and consistent reapplication all did more work in their advice than the jump from 30 to 50. Most of all, find a sunscreen that feels good on your skin because sunscreen will only work if you use it,
Adamson said — a version of the same principle that governs most summer heat safety: the plan you'll actually stick with beats the theoretically stronger one you abandon after twenty minutes, much like the pattern behind how the body adjusts to heat over repeated, consistent exposure rather than a single tough session.
For most people standing in the sunscreen aisle, the decisive choice isn't 30 versus 50. It's whether the bottle in hand is one they'll actually reapply at the two-hour mark.
The other half of the label
SPF measures UVB protection only, but UVA rays carry their own damage — they've been linked to sunburns, wrinkles and some skin cancers, and unlike UVB they pass through window glass and clouds. That's the reason dermatologists in the PolitiFact interview kept circling back to "broad spectrum" wording rather than SPF alone: a broad-spectrum label is the FDA's confirmation that a product was tested against both wavelengths, not just the one printed on the front of the bottle.
Water resistance is the other line worth reading. If a day involves swimming, a workout or heavy sweating, dermatologists recommend a product labeled water resistant — and even those need reapplying roughly every 80 minutes in the water, sooner than the standard two-hour mark on dry land.
