Why Wildfire Smoke Can Smell Like Burning Plastic

The acrid, chemical smell in wildfire smoke isn't your imagination — it's benzene and formaldehyde, and sometimes it's literally burning plastic.

Spokane's skyline disappeared behind a haze the color of dishwater in early August, and people who stepped outside kept describing the same thing: an acrid, plasticky bite that had nothing in common with a backyard campfire. Wildfires had destroyed at least 700 structures across Washington state by August 3, and smoke drifting out of eastern Washington and northern Idaho pushed Portland and Seattle onto lists of the world's most polluted major cities within days.

By the evening of August 5, air-quality index readings in the affected cities were climbing into the 100-to-400 range — unhealthy to hazardous by federal standards — according to the monitoring firm IQAir. Residents were told to stay inside, seal windows and run air purifiers. And a lot of them kept asking the same question: why does this smell like a burning dumpster instead of a bonfire?

Why does wildfire smoke sometimes smell like burning plastic?

The smell isn't a mystery, and it isn't imagined. It comes down to chemistry that keeps happening after smoke leaves the fire itself. When trees, brush and other biomass burn, they release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. Some of those compounds react almost immediately in the heat, producing the familiar, slightly sweet campfire smell that clings to clothes near a wildland blaze.

Others last much longer — and it's those longer-surviving compounds that cause the problem. According to reporting compiled by UCLA's Fielding School of Public Health, they include benzene and formaldehyde, both classified as Group 1 carcinogens — the World Health Organization's own top category for substances with sufficient evidence of causing cancer in humans.

Dr. Michael Jerrett, a professor of environmental health sciences at UCLA Fielding, called those compounds certainly a health concern. He also flagged the counterintuitive part: smoke that travels farther can end up smelling sharper and more chemical than smoke standing right next to the fire. Ultraviolet light keeps breaking down the short-lived VOCs during transit, and the byproducts of that ongoing reaction are what carry the acrid, plastic-like edge. Smoke that has drifted a thousand miles has simply had more time to cook.

Is it actually burning plastic — not just chemistry?

Sometimes, yes, quite literally. When a wildfire moves out of open wildland and into a neighborhood — what fire scientists call the wildland-urban interface — it stops burning mostly trees and starts burning houses, furniture, vehicles, siding and the wiring inside walls, nearly all of it built from or coated in plastic. A fire consuming a subdivision produces meaningfully different smoke than one consuming a hillside of pine, according to the nonprofit Plastic Pollution Coalition, which tracks the growing overlap between plastics production and fire risk. Manufacturing plants and materials-recovery facilities caught in a fire's path can add their own chemical signature to the smoke as well.

The group's co-founder and chief executive put the built-environment problem bluntly:

"Plastics not only make wildfires worse; their production also fuels climate change, compounding the risks. We must urgently eliminate plastics from our built environment, and build and rebuild better with nontoxic and plastic-free alternatives."

Should the smell change how you protect yourself?

Health officials generally treat any smoky, chemical odor as a cue to check the local air-quality index rather than relying on the nose alone — smell sensitivity varies widely person to person, and by the time a room smells like burning plastic, particulate levels are often already elevated. The advice doesn't change much regardless of what's burning: stay indoors with windows and doors sealed, run a HEPA filter if one is available, wear an N95 respirator outdoors if a trip out is unavoidable, and treat symptoms like a scratchy throat, brain fog or chest tightness as signs of real exposure rather than an overreaction.

That same escalating-danger logic sits behind the wildfire agencies' national alert system. When the country hits Preparedness Level 5, it isn't just a statement that firefighting resources are stretched thin — it's an acknowledgment that fire behavior has outrun the normal playbook. Some of the most extreme fires now generate their own weather entirely; pyrocumulonimbus clouds can loft smoke into the stratosphere and carry it thousands of miles past the original burn, which helps explain why people in cities nowhere near an active fire line keep reporting the same plastic smell.

Most wildfire smoke, chemically speaking, is still mostly what it smells like: burned wood. But as more fires tear through neighborhoods instead of around them, and as smoke drifts farther before it reaches anyone's nose, that plastic-tinged smell is becoming less of a fluke and more of a signal worth acting on — especially for young children, older adults, and anyone with existing heart or lung disease.
