Why Worker Bees Die When They Sting but Queens Don't
One insect, two very different stingers. The barb is why a worker honeybee dies after a single sting, and why the queen never does.
A honeybee worker gets one sting in its entire life. The queen of that same hive can sting again and again, for years, and never lose a thing in the process. The difference isn't temperament or venom supply. It's the physical shape of the needle.
Worker honeybee stingers are barbed — built more like a fishhook than a needle, with tiny backward-facing hooks running along the shaft. When a worker stings a mammal, those barbs lodge in the skin and won't pull back out. As the bee tries to fly away, the stinger tears loose from its abdomen and takes part of the bee's digestive tract, muscles and nerve tissue with it, according to reporting from the Forest Preserve District of Will County citing the trade publication Bee Culture. The bee dies from the injury within minutes. The detached stinger, grimly, keeps working after the fact — a cluster of nerve cells still controls the muscles around it, driving the barbs deeper and continuing to pump venom into the wound even after the bee itself is gone. That's the actual reason first-aid advice says to scrape a stinger out fast rather than pluck it: every extra second lets the abandoned stinger inject more venom.
The queen's stinger was never built for that job
A queen honeybee's stinger has none of that barbing. It's smooth, closer to a wasp's, and slides in and out cleanly — which means using it doesn't cost the queen her life or even much tissue. But queens rarely turn that stinger on a predator at all. They save it almost entirely for each other.

When a hive raises more than one virgin queen — which happens routinely, since colonies hedge their bets by rearing several candidates at once — the first to emerge from her cell goes hunting for her rivals, still sealed inside theirs, and stings them before they can even get out. If two queens emerge close together, they fight directly, and only one walks away. Once she's mated and settled into laying eggs, a queen stays inside the hive's laying chamber for the rest of her life and essentially never stings again — she's already won the only fight that mattered.
Most bees can't sting you at all
The barbed-stinger story that dominates the "bees die when they sting" myth actually applies to a narrow slice of the insect world. Of roughly 20,000 known bee species, only about 500 are capable of stinging in the first place, and among those, only females carry a stinger — males of every bee species are stingless entirely. Species that can't sting, including plenty of solitary bees most people never notice, rely on biting instead.
Bumblebees and carpenter bees split the difference: they can sting, and like queens, their stingers are smooth enough to use more than once. So can every wasp and hornet, including yellowjackets — which are wasps, not bees, despite constantly getting lumped in with them, and which the Illinois Department of Public Health identifies as the most aggressive stinging insect people are likely to encounter in the U.S.
The stakes are usually low, but not always zero
For the overwhelming majority of people, a sting from any of these insects means a few minutes of pain and a welt, not a medical event. Basic first aid — scrape out a lodged stinger, wash the site, ice it, and use an over-the-counter antihistamine or pain reliever if needed — resolves most encounters within a day. But the exception matters: the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded an average of 62 deaths a year between 2000 and 2017 from insect stings nationwide, with roughly 80% of those deaths occurring in men, most from anaphylactic reactions or from being stung repeatedly by a swarm.
The barb, in the end, is the whole story. It's a single anatomical detail — hooked versus smooth — that decides whether an insect's most dangerous weapon is disposable or reusable, and by extension whether the insect wielding it lives to sting again. Evolution built the worker honeybee's stinger for one devastating use against a mammal-sized predator threatening the hive, not for a career. The queen, the wasp and the yellowjacket never made that trade.
