Why IMAX Screens Are Curved (and Some Aren't)
Traditional and Dome IMAX theaters curve their screens to fight distortion and widen your field of view — but not every IMAX auditorium does.
Walk into one IMAX auditorium and the screen bows toward you like the inside of a bowl. Walk into another one, a few miles away, advertising the exact same "IMAX" name on the marquee, and the screen is flat. Both are real IMAX. Neither theater is lying to you. The confusion is built into how the format grew up.
Is an IMAX screen curved?
Often, but not always — and that split is the part most quick answers skip. IMAX traces back to a team of Canadian filmmakers, Graeme Ferguson, Roman Kroitor and Robert Kerr, along with engineer William Shaw, who synced nine projectors together for a multi-screen installation at Expo '67 in Montreal, according to a history of the format published by The Revolver Club. The first true IMAX Dome — a screen curving floor to ceiling around the audience — opened at Expo '70 in Osaka, and the first permanent IMAX installation followed in 1971 at Ontario Place's Cinesphere in Toronto, where it's still screening films today.
That domed, wraparound format is where the "IMAX screens are curved" reputation comes from, and traditional IMAX and IMAX Dome theaters still use it. But IMAX today runs three distinct auditorium types — Dome, Digital and Laser — and the newer Digital and Laser installations built into multiplexes frequently use large, flat screens instead, relying on the projection system and screen size rather than curvature to deliver the format's signature scale.
Why do IMAX screens curve in the first place?
Where a screen does curve, it's solving a specific optical problem. Project a flat image from a single point onto a flat surface and the light has farther to travel to reach the edges than the center, which warps the picture into what's known as the pincushion effect — straight lines start to bow inward near the corners. Curving the screen equalizes that travel distance, keeping the image geometrically consistent from edge to edge.
The curve does double duty beyond fixing distortion. It wraps a wider field of view into the audience's peripheral vision, which is most of what people mean when they describe an IMAX screening as "immersive," and it evens out brightness across the frame, cutting down on the hot spots that show up when a projector's light isn't reflecting back at the same intensity everywhere. IMAX auditoriums also run a dual-projector setup, with two machines synced to throw a brighter, more uniform image than a single projector could manage on a screen that size.
What does "IMAX" actually promise if the screen isn't always curved?
The consistent thread across all three formats is scale and aspect ratio, not curvature specifically. IMAX's native aspect ratio runs around 1.43:1 — taller and boxier than a standard widescreen frame — which is why footage shot for true IMAX cameras fills noticeably more vertical space than the same movie in a standard multiplex auditorium. That's the detail worth checking before buying a ticket: a "curved IMAX" and a "flat Laser IMAX" can sit two screens apart in the same multiplex, and the giveaway isn't the shape of the wall, it's whether the auditorium is billed as Dome, Digital or Laser. It's the same fine print that trips people up over how long trailers are allowed to run before a feature, or why the listed showtime is never actually when the movie starts — the marketing term and the technical reality don't always line up neatly, and theaters rarely volunteer the difference at the box office.
None of that makes a flat-screen Laser IMAX a lesser experience. Laser projection brings a wider color range and sharper contrast than the xenon bulbs older IMAX auditoriums still run, trading the wraparound curve for image precision. What it does mean is that "curved" was never actually the promise. It was just the easiest part to notice, in the format built around a screen large enough that you'd never see all of it at once anyway.
